A RESOUNDING SUCCESS: THE IVY FASHION BALL – RECONSTRUCTING ORIENTALISM

Updated: Jul 15

MAJU TOWER, KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – Beneath the towering heights of Maju Tower, fashion met cultural revival in a spectacle that dared to challenge perceptions and celebrate identity. The Ivy Fashion Ball 6: Reconstructing Orientalism, held on May 24, 2024, was a resounding success — not just in execution, but in vision, advocacy, and representation.

One of the night’s most powerful highlights was the solo collection by Cordillera's top designer, Maila Alog, under her signature M.A. brand, proudly housed by Baguio’s Closet in Baguio City. Known for her commitment to indigenous craftsmanship and cultural storytelling, Maila once again elevated the runway by bringing Cordilleran heritage to the international stage.

Her pieces were more than garments — they were woven narratives. Crafted with native handwoven textiles and structured in elegant silhouettes, the collection embodied the strength, grace, and evolving voice of the indigenous Filipina. In a show that sought to reconstruct Orientalism, Maila Alog’s work powerfully reclaimed space for indigenous identity to be seen not as a curiosity, but as a creative force.

Visionaries Behind the Curtain

The seamless beauty of the show was directed by the brilliant tandem of Alex and Ernst, whose artistic mastery shaped the event into a memorable and cohesive experience. Their leadership was the force behind each transformative moment on the runway.

Fierce Models, Powerful Presence

Maila Alog’s creations were worn by an exceptional lineup of Filipina models: Khember Baguitan, Doly Joy Macaburas, Jinky Ayn, Kristine, Xyliz, and Aira — each one delivering strength and elegance with every step.

Special mention goes to Juanita Langpawen Warrey, who traveled all the way from Hong Kong just to be part of the celebration. Her presence reflected the dedication and unity that fashion can inspire across borders.

Malaysia-based beauties Rose, Chelsea, Gerol, Arbie, Mae, and Janet also added charm and professionalism to the show, along with young talents Raphael, Shobee, Iniya, Sky, and Aaron, who filled the stage with youthful radiance. Deep gratitude was also extended to their supportive families — the true cheerleaders behind every successful walk.

The Backbone: Team Malaysia

Behind the scenes, Ivy and Frankie led Team Malaysia with unwavering commitment. Their efforts — often unseen — were the foundation that held every detail in place, ensuring a flawless production from start to finish.

Moments Captured, Memories Preserved

Thanks to Sir Ian, every emotion, expression, and triumph of the night was preserved through stunning photographs that captured more than visuals — they captured meaning.

Vibrant Performances

Adding rhythm and soul to the event were stellar performances from KLJ Movers, Miss Rose, and Noel — each act bringing energy and cultural resonance to the stage.

MVP of the Night

The night’s heartbeat was none other than Marky Perez — the event’s multi-talented emcee and HMUA. His professionalism, infectious humor, and boundless energy unified the program with flair and finesse.

The Root of Strength: Family

At the core of it all was heartfelt gratitude. To her beloved Allan, Nalla, Saber, her parents, siblings, and nieces and nephews — Maila Alog offered her deepest thanks:

“You are the quiet strength behind every bold step I take. This success belongs to us all.”

What’s Next?

With Reconstructing Orientalism now part of the Ivy Fashion Ball’s growing legacy, the journey continues. The ball is set to travel once more — to yet another country, another runway, another cultural exchange.

One thing is certain: with designers like Maila Alog leading the charge, the future of fashion will remain deeply rooted in heritage, and boldly unafraid to tell its own story.
